RARE!! CA. 1901-1927 ROSENTHAL MOLIERE GERMANY TROPENZAUBER HAND-PAINTED COBALT BLUE HUMMINGBIRD DISH
This stunning Rosenthal dish that is so very rare was created in Kronach or Moliere, Germany.
It’s marked with the Green marking that tells it was made from 1901-1927 according to the information on markings that we found.
We believe “Tropenzauber” #3199 to be the pattern. There is an additional #9 on the back and this quite possibly could be that it is in the rare cobalt color, instead of the more available white color.
In mint condition, no flaws whatsoever
This fine deep cobalt porcelain dish is accented with thick 24K gold gilt designs and sprays around edges and around bird. That amazing, pristine gold gilding on top of the brilliant cobalt and white underglazes makes the dish even richer more like a piece of art glass and not one upon which you’d serve.
There are five subtle and gentle points on the piece that are pierced or reticulated with exactly seven holes in a pattern that is the same on each, reminiscent of a honeycomb.
Inside features what appears to be a white hummingbird in the white glaze and two tropical looking flowers, also in the white glaze beneath the cobalt.
9" diameter x 3" tall
Rosenthal was founded in 1879 by Philipp Rosenthal in Bavarian Selb, Germany. He and his wife actually started out selling their gorgeous wares door to door. By the 1930s Rosenthal had been fortunate and successful enough to buy many factories. Unfortunately because Philipp Rosenthal was Jewish, he was forced to leave Germany, but the factories continued operations during WWII but Philipp died. His son, also named Philip, finally regained control of the factories in 1950 and was very successful up to the time in 1979 when they were celebrating their 100th anniversary and had hired almost 10,000 workers and artists. Since that time Rosenthal has had shared ownership and although pieces may have the name Rosenthal, it’s nothing like when they owned, ran, and produced their own pieces of art.
